Dedicated to the friends who are not afraid to look at the ugly and not content to let it stay that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have come that they may have life and have it to the full.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think Jesus must be talking about a different \u201cthey,\u201d
For I am not living \u201cfully alive.\u201d
\u201cMostly dead\u201d seems more accurate
To the facts
Of my life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I don\u2019t think \u201chealing\u201d is a strong enough word
To capture what I need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I need resurrection<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I look at the Jesus on the cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Afraid
Betrayed
Lashed
Pierced
Broken
Suffocated
Abandoned
Empty<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is finished<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s what I feel now, here, in me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many times, I run away —   
like the disciples \u2013 from the agony
Hanging there<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Maybe if I don\u2019t look at it, it won\u2019t hurt.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But then other times, like the Romans,
I leave the wounds exposed
To the elements
To the crowds
As a statement of violence<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Beware, the worst I can do.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But those don\u2019t lead to resurrection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even Jesus needed help to get
From there
To where he was ready
To defeat death<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some friends, seeing the judgments laid on him
Watching him bear the cross
Decided
In an act of courage
Of faith
Of love<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To put their very hands on the battered corpse of their friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What if this is the key to finding the miracle I need? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe I can come to my crosses,
With courage to face the pain again
With faith that there\u2019s an end I can\u2019t see
With love for the parts that have died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I go accompanied by the richest of Friends –
And one or two others perhaps –
To prepare my pain
For life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I ask permission.
\u2026Lord, can I take this part down from where it died? \u2026<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wash the body with water and spices.
\u2026Remove the rot and reveal the original wounds\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wrap it in linen, bright and pure.
\u2026Provided for you at a high price …<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leave it in the tomb.
\u2026 Let it go. Rest in peace\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then, like the women who loved Him,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wait\u2026
Mourning the loss with those you trust to mourn with you.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wait\u2026
Ready to bring more spice to wash again if necessary.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wait\u2026
Holding in tension the promises that seem to have been broken.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until one day
At the kairos <\/em>time
You will return to the place of death
And, surprised, find
In the garden<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An empty tomb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
